It’s been over three years since September Malevolence emerged onto the post-rock scene as Sweden’s new hope in the genre. Their strong melodies and well-performed songwriting earned them a loyal following and the debut album “Tomorrow we’ll wonder where this generation gets it’s priorities from” was voted the 4th best instrumental release of 2005 by The Silent Ballet. But when the band now returns after three years of touring, switching members, writing songs, rejecting songs, switching members again, it’s as a band transformed, evolved and with a new almost desperate edge to the music. Listening to the lyrics and taking in the albums atmosphere you can tell it hasn’t been three years of sitting in the sun, enjoying life...
Taking elements from acts like Arcade Fire, And you will know us by the trail of dead, Low and Mogwai and putting them in their Scandinavian-sounding melting pot, the result is an album that definitely sounds their own. “After this darkness, there’s a next” is filled to the brim with beautiful guitar leads, waves of melancholy - and even though September Malevolence are no longer an instrumental band - they kept all the good parts from post-rock, building intricate songstructures and
wonderful crescendos.
With their 4th European tour coming up in May/June and plans already been made to return in September as well as touring Japan in the fall, September Malevolence is most likely a band that you will be hearing more about in a near future. And they deserve to be heard.
