Maybe you already met him… At wintertime on pedestrian streets with a thermos jug, playing for the rushing masses. At home on sunny afternoons when this nice young man records songs in the cottage next door, accompanied by a constant whir of lawn-mowers. Or on the Autobahn when he’s once again touring Germany in his dented box-waggon. Maybe that was him.
FLORIAN OSTERTAG. Born in 1980, raised in a townsfolk of 300 somewhere on the Swabian Mountains, learning several instruments at young age but blooming late: not until the age of 16 Florian seriously discovers the world of music and starts writing own songs, primarily influenced by a Christian environment. He plays the piano and the guitar in various bands until daring first attempts as a producer and sound technician in 2003: Florian rents a house at a farmyard where he launches his first musician-community and records other bands. As the guys have to move out in 2005, Florian nests in his parents´ garden house and produces his first own EP, playing all instruments by himself. And his urge to play the world grows deeper. First solo tours take him all the way to Scandinavia; he supports Sarah Brendel, September Leaves, Philipp Poisel and many more. Always by his side: his guitar and an old analogue ribbon machine that accompanies him on stage, trustily rotating… Along the way he sets up an own Recording Studio in his South German hometown where he can work in comfortable solitude. Later on, this place shall give birth to his debut album “The Constant Search”: he writes songs, plays and produces it all by himself and spends almost 2 years meticulously finishing it with loving attention to detail. Instead of hiring additional studio musicians he relies on his talented roommates – a choice which not only adds further musical facets the album but above all a proper quantum of honesty. No fake granted.
In a very unique way „The Constant Search“ combines the easiness of innocence with deep melancholy. There are carefully selected moments when even the most beautiful melodies and harmonies are allowed room for the unexpected. Overall, Florian tells about the search for something that calms you from the storm: true love or the paradise of a fallen world. And at the same time he admits that the search might not even have a reasonable chance.
Someone that humble and understating but filling his songs with such a musical self-awareness deserves best attention; just as the busker with the dented car or the nice guy next door. Be aware – it might be FLORIAN OSTERTAG.
